Manning Avenue and North Main Corridor
A large-scale makeover of Manning Avenue and North Main Street is far along in the planning stages.
Two firms are splitting duties on what is a main artery into Downtown Sumter. As of Spring 2022, it is expected to have a Spring 2023 construction let date with 24 to 36 months of construction.
In the Summer of 2017, the old Dairy Queen was razed, as it was a public health concern and an eyesore. Federal dollars -- $11.4 million -- are being paired with $5 million in Penny for Progress funds to remake Manning Avenue and North Main Street. The goal is to improve pedestrian safety, create a smoother traffic flow and enhance aesthetics.
