In 1958, the abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko was commissioned to paint a series of murals for the Four Seasons restaurant in the Segram Building on Park Avenue in New York. He was paid $35,000 for the work, which was the largest commission that had ever been offered to a painter. In this play by John Logan, Rothko hires an apprentice to assist him in his studio where he creates forty murals for the project. Rothko tells the apprentice very early on that he is not his teacher but that he is his employer. Throughout the course of the one act play Rothko reveals his wisdom, passion and strong commitment to his work. His influence on the young man is evident by the end of the play.
