Sumter County is Presently Seeking: 
Programmer II for the Information Technology Department

Examples of Work Performed: : 

Under occasional supervision, designs, develops and maintains computer software for County Departments. Provides user support and training; analyzes, documents and recommends solutions to computer problems. Receives and responds to inquiries and requests for assistance with computer software and hardware projects and problems. Identifies and recommends solutions; designs, develops, installs and tests software. Diagnoses and makes minor adjustments or repairs to computer hardware. Prepares computer program and hardware documentation for users and provides effective user training. May work past standard office hours as needed. Operates a variety of equipment such as computers, printers, receipt printers, optical drive projectors, hand tools, telephone, etc. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as the Information Technology Director, co-workers, customers, other County department heads and employees, technical service representatives, consultants, vendors, instructors, etc. Manage Microsoft SQL databases. Performs general computer database and hardware maintenance. Maintains daily computer backup. Performs other related duties as required. Reports to the Director of Information Technology.

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: 

Has thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and policies of the Information Technology Department as they pertain to the performance of duties of the Programmer II. Has thorough knowledge of the organization of the department and of related departments and agencies. Has considerable knowledge of the functions and interrelationships of County and other governmental agencies. Has the ability to offer training and assistance to co-workers and employees of other departments as required. Has extensive skill in the use of computers and knowledge of computer software and applications. Is able to diagnose computer problems with speed and accuracy and develop effective solutions to problems. Has knowledge of the standard tools, materials and practices of the trade. Has skill in the care and use of required tools and equipment. Has knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade. Has the ability to use independent judgment as needed in performing routine and non-routine tasks. Is able to take the initiative to complete the duties of the position without the need of direct supervision. Is able to read and interpret technical manuals and related materials pertaining to the responsibilities of the job. Knows how to prepare computer-generated documents, routine reports and memos with accuracy and completeness. Has comprehensive knowledge of the terminology and various professional languages used within the department. Knows how to maintain effective relationships with personnel of other departments, professionals and members of the public through contact and cooperation. Knows how to react calmly and quickly in emergency situations. Has the mathematical ability to handle required calculations. Has the ability to plan, organize and prioritize daily assignments and work activities. Has good organizational, technical and human relations skills. Has the ability to learn and utilize new skills and information to improve job performance and efficiency. Must be able to lift and/or carry weights of up to twenty pounds. 

Minimum Requirements: 

Requires an Associate’s degree in computer technology or data processing supplemented by three to five years of experience in computer programming or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Knowledge of Microsoft Office and SQL, IBMi operating system, COBOL and RPG programming a plus. Must possess a valid state driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
