Current forecasts for Hurricane Florence are showing a combination of high wind speeds and the possibility of 12 inches of rainfall coming to the Sumter, South Carolina area. Tropical storm force winds are expected to arrive Friday.

If you live in a flood prone neighborhood, you may want to consider using Sumter High School at 2580 McCrays Mill Road, which has opened as a shelter. Mayewood Middle School, 4300 East Brewington Road, is also open and both shelters are under the auspice of the American Red Cross and the S.C. Department of Social Services. No pets are allowed.

In the event that weather hits the area, we urge you to limit phone calls as cell phone towers can get inundated, thereby disrupting emergency calls for first responders.

We would also like to please ask residents to stay off the roads once the wind picks up. High wind speeds can create dangerous driving conditions.
