A ribbon cutting was held Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2018, to officially open the Public Safety Complex in Sumter, S.C.
With the Greater Sumter Chamber of Commerce on hand, along with officials from the City of Sumter and Sumter County Government, the new headquarters for the Sumter Police Department with a new E-911 communications center and the new home of the Sumter Fire Department were formally unveiled.
The complex is a centerpiece of the 2014 Penny for Progress Continuation, and presiding over the ceremony was Sumter County Council Chairman James T. McCain Jr. After McCain welcomed everyone and offered remarks, City Councilman Calvin Hastie Sr. led everyone in prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance.
Sumter Mayor Joseph T. McElveen Jr. spoke briefly, as did Fire Chief Karl Ford, Police Chief Russell Roark and Bob Smith, who served as chairman of the Penny for Progress Committee.
