Mrs. McGhaney is also a public servant.  She served as a grassroots community leader for many years, where she worked to help find positive solutions for troubled youth.  She was appointed to the Sumter City, County Planning Commission where she served four years.  On July 16, 2002, she was elected to Sumter County Council, representing Council District 5; she was re-elected in 2004, 2008, 2012, and in 2016.  She continues to serve on Sumter County Council, and has served as the Vice-Chairman of County Council, as well as several terms as the Chairman.  During Women History Month, 2008, she was honored by the Sumter Volunteers for her Outstanding Community Service, and she was added to the Women's Honor Roll of Sumter County.  On June 3, 2010, she was recognized as a Riley Institute Fellow for having successfully completed the requirements of the South Carolina Diversity Leaders Initiative Midlands Class III at the Riley Institute at Furman University. She represents Sumter County on the Santee-Lynches Regional Councils of Government, and presently serves as Second Vice-Chairman.  Mrs. McGhaney participated in the 2017-2018 Honorary Commander Program at Shaw Air Force Base and paired with the Commander of the 20th Fighter Wing.
