Sumter County Emergency Medical Services currently operates 7 Ambulances daily staffed with 2 personnel; We operate 1 QRV (quick response vehicle) which is staffed by the Shift Supervisor, who is a Paramedic. Depending on staffing, an additional QRV (quick response vehicle) is staffed with the Assistant Shift Supervisor, who is a Paramedic.  Sumter County EMS currently utilizes two additional contract ambulances through Guardian Ambulance.  Both Guardian Ambulances operate out of our Headquarters Station on Hampton Ave.  Both units are in rotation with Sumter County EMS units and function under the direction of Sumter County EMS Management.  Sumter County EMS operates out of 3 stations located in different parts of the County.

Sumter County EMS has 14 licensed Ambulances which allows for a spare ambulance for each crew in the event of unforeseen mechanical problems or routine maintenance.

Sumter County EMS is a licensed Advanced Life Support system through our regulatory body, the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control. This means we can provide Advanced Life Support. Due to critically low numbers of EMS Providers across the country, EMS systems are struggling to meet the requirement to have a Paramedic on every Ambulance all the time. Our Shift Supervisor is able to provide Advanced Life Support back-up when needed in the event a Paramedic is unavailable on the Ambulance.

Sumter County EMS responds to approximately 22,000 calls for service annually and transports approximately 18,000 people annually.

Sumter County EMS has a state approved training program to help our personnel maintain their certifications to provide Emergency Medical Care to the community. Staff attends regular training seminars, from a minimum of 4 hours up to a maximum of 8 hours depending on the topic.

Sumter County EMS provides coverage for special events in our community. A request must be made at least 2 weeks prior to the event for us to attempt to accommodate your request.
