What are the hours of operation for the recycling centers?
The hours of operation are as follows: 7:00 am – 7:00 pm Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday; 1:30 pm – 7:00 pm on Sunday. The recycling centers are closed on Tuesday and Thursday.
Who can use the recycling centers?
Only residents of Sumter are allowed to use the recycling centers. No commercial or business entities allowed.
I live within the city limits of Sumter. Can I use the county recycling centers?
I live outside the city limits and would like curbside pick-up of my household garbage. Who do I call?
Residents who live outside the city limits must contract with a private vendor for curbside pick-up of household garbage. County residents can call Allied Waste at 803-428-2400. There is a monthly fee for this service.
How clean do bottles, cans, and plastic containers need to be before I too them into the recycling bin?
You do not need to wash your containers but a good rinse will suffice.
Do I need to remove the labels off jars and cans?
Where can plastic bags be recycled?
Sumter County does not accept plastic bags for recycling. Most area grocery stores do accept plastic bags for recycling in containers outside of their stores.
Where can I recycle old electronics?
Electronics such as computers (and accessories), TVs, VCRs, DVD players, fax machines, scanners, copiers, gaming systems, stereos, cell phones and rechargeable batteries are all accepted for recycling at the Sumter County C&D Landfill. For more information see the e-waste notice.
What should I do with common household alkaline batteries (non-rechargeable)?
Throw them away. Regular household batteries are composed primarily of common metals – steel, zinc, and manganese – and do not pose a health or environmental risk during normal use or disposal.
