August 21, 2017, was a special day in Sumter County as all citizens and thousands of visitors enjoyed the spectacular totality of the 2017 Solar Eclipse.  The weather was perfect, even the clouds gave up their place for a clear sky hours before the Solar Eclipse at 2:43 p.m. eastern standard time.

Dillon Park, located off Highway 378, was displayed with vendors and activities from 12:00 - 4:00 p.m. for the Eclipse followers to enjoy this historical outdoor event.  People from all over the USA made Sumter their destination for this once in a life time event.  I personally spoke to families from Texas, New York, and Virginia while I was handing out “Moon Pies” on our Courthouse lawn.  The visitors were very grateful for the southern hospitality shown to them during their three-day visit in our community.  I am so proud of the way our citizens welcomed everyone into our home called “Sumter, South Carolina”.

I especially thank our County Recreation staff, Law Enforcement, and EMS; along with our special partner the City of Sumter and their staffs, who made this a special day.  Know that all your work is appreciated and not overlooked.  I thank each of you who go above and beyond to make Sumter a place for which we all can be proud of now and in the future.
