The demolition of a building next to the Sumter County Administration building will require short-term traffic adjustments.
Please avoid North Harvin Street between East Hampton Avenue and East Calhoun Street if possible as there will be two lanes of traffic on a temporary basis. A renovation of the Administration building is underway and the first step in the process is the demolition and debris removal of an old two-story building.
East Canal Street between North Main and North Harvin is also closed to ensure the safety of pedestrians and motorists.
The Sumter County Judicial Center and Sumter County Administration are both open for normal business hours.
As a reminder, the Auditor and Treasurer’s offices have been relocated to the old Item building, now known as Magnolia Place, and located at 20 North Magnolia Street.

The leadership of Sumter County Council will continue as it has been for another two years after Chairman James T. McCain Jr. and Vice-Chairman James “Jimmy” R. Byrd Jr. were elected Tuesday evening by their fellow Council members to serve another term.

At the outset of the first Council meeting of 2019, Charles T. Edens, District 4, nominated McCain, District 6, to serve another two-year term as chairman. Artie Baker, District 2, then nominated Byrd, District 3, to serve another two-year term as vice-chairman.

The vote was unanimous.

Sumter County Council Tuesday evening during its first regular meeting of the year voted to defer a rezoning request for property on Loring Mill Road after a lengthy discussion about land use matters.

After members of Council voted unanimously to elect Chairman James T. McCain Jr. and Vice-Chairman James R. “Jimmy” Byrd Jr. to continue serving for another two-year leadership term, City-County Planning Director George McGregor spoke to members of council.

Randolph Black owns a 1.48 acre parcel and a .74 acre parcel at 2110 Loring Mill Road and wants to rezone the property from Agricultural Conservation (AC) to Light Industrial-Warehouse (LI-W) for the purpose of having a tiny home manufacturing and sales site.

Three Sumter County Council members were sworn into office on Jan. 2 and Jan. 3, 2019.

District 2 Councilman Artie Baker was sworn in for another four-year term on Jan. 2, 2019, in Council Chambers by Sumter County Clerk of Court Jamie Campbell. Due to a family emergency, Baker was unable to attend a Jan. 3 swearing-in ceremony at the Sumter County Judicial Center, but was able to attend a reception that followed.

District 6 Councilman and Chairman James T. McCain Jr. and District 4 Councilman Charles T. Edens were sworn in for four-year terms by S.C. Supreme Court Justice George C. “Buck” James Jr. during the ceremony.

District 5 Council Member Vivian Fleming-McGhaney presided over the brief ceremony, and the Rev. Dr. Ralph W. Canty Sr. offered an invocation and the benediction. The Sumter County Sheriff's Office Choir performed a selection. A reception on the third floor of the Judicial Center followed the ceremony and was attended by family, friends and colleagues.

Sumter County Council’s first meeting of the year will be held at 6 p.m. on Jan. 8, 2019, on the third floor of the Administration building at 13 East Canal Street in Council Chambers.

Recycle Your Christmas Tree – Grinding of the Greens

Sumter County and the City of Sumter are giving residents an opportunity to recycle their Christmas trees at the annual "Grinding of the Greens". Donated Christmas trees will be made into mulch. It gives residents a chance to be 'green' with their discarded trees.

Before donating your tree to the “Grinding of the Greens”, please note the following: Only live Christmas trees will be accepted-no wreaths, garland, greenery or tree stands.  Please remove all tinsel, lights and decorations.

You can donate your tree at the following locations:

• County Recycling Centers: Rainaire Boulevard, Stamey Livestock Road, Cane Savannah Road, Pinewood Road, Queen Chapel Road, Bethel Church Road, Alligator Branch Road, Pleasant Grove Road  and Spencer Road
• At the entrance to Dillon Park (off Frontage Road)
• City residents may place their tree curbside. The city will collect the trees January 7th – 17th.

 On Saturday, January 19, 2019 from 7 a.m. to 9:00 a.m., at Dillon Park, FREE MULCH made from Christmas trees will be distributed to residents on a first-come, first-served basis.  If you would like to have some mulch, bring containers or bags, tools to pick it up and a way to haul it.  Even those who do not donate a tree can receive mulch.

The Sumter City-County Planning Department, in accordance with National Flood Insurance Program regulation 65.7(b)(1), hereby gives notice of the City of Sumter and Sumter County’s intent to revise the flood hazard information, generally located between Second Mill Pond Dam and the Pocotaligo River. Specifically, the flood hazard information shall be revised along Green Swamp from a point approximately 1200 feet upstream of the Pocotaligo River to a point approximately 150 feet upstream of Second Mill Pond Dam.

As a result of the revision, the floodway shall widen, the 1% annual chance water-surface elevations shall increase, and the 1% annual chance floodplain shall widen within the area of revision.
